When to go to an emergency department
Emergency department deals with serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies.
In situations of threat to health or life, hospital emergency department (SOR) provides assistance. Remember that SOR helps persons in serious conditions, which may result in serious damage to body functions or loss of life.
For example, in the case of:
- accident
- trauma
- poisoning
- bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract or urinary tract
Referrals: Patients who come to the Emergency Department (SOR) or are brought by paramedics in an emergency do not need a referral.
Information about treatment of persons from EU/EFTA Member States in Poland
The Emergency Department (SOR) at Krakow University Hospital is located in the Trauma Centre for Emergency and Disaster Medicine, to which victims of serious accidents from the entire region are transported by air and ambulances. It should be remembered that the seriously injured always have priority for admission and medical supplies.
All Hospital Emergency Departments are, in accordance with the Act on State Emergency Medical Services, organisational units of hospitals intended to provide health care services to people in states of sudden threat to health and life. The tasks of Emergency Department (ED/SOR) include, above all, diagnostics and treatment necessary to stabilise the patient's vital functions, threatened as a result of acute internal diseases, poisoning, accidents or various types of injuries. These units are also required to provide health services and medical care to potential disaster victims. If necessary, they are required to ensure appropriate transport of victims to specialist medical facilities.
The Hospital Emergency Department is the first link to, and an integral part of, the Trauma Centre for Emergency and Disaster Medicine and therefore accepts a large number of patients with multiple organ injuries from across the macro-region.
The Emergency Department (SOR) of the University Hospital in Krakow accepts adult patients in states of sudden threat to health and life. The injured are brought by medical rescue teams or report themselves. Health services provided in the unit consist of medical triage (confirmation or exclusion of a medical emergency), diagnosis and undertaking treatment to the extent necessary to stabilise the patient's condition. An important task of the ED (SOR) is also the training of specialists in emergency medicine.
A significant percentage of patients are suspected of acute coronary syndrome or stroke. If these diseases are confirmed, the injured are urgently transferred to the Laboratory of Haemodynamics and Angiography or the Clinical Department of Neurology of the University Hospital, where immediately implemented interventional treatment significantly increases the patient's prognosis for recovery.
The Hospital Emergency Department (SOR) has state-of-the-art imaging diagnostic equipment and equipment for measuring critical parameters. The ED (SOR) also has access to a diagnostic laboratory, where a full panel of tests can be performed immediately. On the basis of these, full-profile treatment of patients is implemented in the relevant units of the University Hospital.

Breast Unit
Breast Unit
The Breast Unit - Breast Cancer Treatment Centre at the University Hospital in Kraków is a centre where patients with suspected breast cancer can count on fast and comprehensive diagnostics and multidirectional treatment.
The team's work is modelled on proven methods from American and Western European centres, based on the so-called Breast Unit. In addition to conventional ultrasound (scan) and digital mammogram, it is possible to extend the diagnosis with 3D mammogram (tomosynthesis), fine-needle aspiration biopsy, thick-needle biopsy and mammotome biopsy performed under ultrasound or MMG guidance.
In each case of diagnosed breast cancer, the treatment decision is made jointly by the doctors attending weekly meetings. The team includes radiologists, surgeons, gynaecologists, pathologists, oncologists, radiotherapists and a plastic surgeon. All patients can also count on the assistance of a physiotherapist and a psychologist.
The centre provides counselling for young women with breast cancer who wish to preserve their fertility after oncological treatment, and is also the reference facility in the macro-region for pregnant women diagnosed with breast cancer.
The University Breast Treatment Centre has an extensive educational offer and provides training in the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases for doctors specialising in general surgery, oncological surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and gynaecological oncology.
Around 400 women diagnosed with breast cancer are treated here annually. Due to its location within the structure of the University Hospital and its intensive care facilities, the centre diagnoses and operates on the most severe cases: those with multiple internal medicine burdens, synchronous tumours in other locations and patients after kidney transplants.
The surgical procedures currently performed at the unit encompass a range of techniques, including sparing and oncoplastic procedures, sentinel node biopsies, radical procedures, and finally, simultaneous and deferred breast reconstructions. A multidisciplinary team of radiotherapists and oncologists provides comprehensive care, ensuring the provision of additional treatment modalities such as brachytherapy, teleradiotherapy, and systemic therapy.
Extracorporeal Therapies Centre (ECTR)
The Extracorporeal Therapies Centre (ECTR) is dedicated to fostering collaboration and innovation in the field of extracorporeal therapies at the University Hospital in Krakow. The extracorporeal techniques, which have the potential to support or replace organ functions, are developing rapidly and could become an important part of modern intensive therapy. The aim of ECTR is to improve the treatment outcomes for patients in the most severe clinical condition, including in the following areas:
- severe respiratory failure,
- severe circulatory failure,
- cardiac arrest (eCPR programme for Krakow),
- sepsis with multiple organ failure,
- polytrauma,
- major surgeries,
- acute liver failure (ALF)
- acute renal failure,
- poisoning (intoxications),
- immunological and neurological diseases.
The University Hospital is a highly innovative facility that uses innovative, advanced therapies and provides patients with comprehensive, coordinated care at all stages - from outpatient specialist care, through surgical and conservative hospital departments, to the most advanced intensive therapy. The University Hospital has the most highly qualified medical staff and provides treatment for the widest range of health problems in our region.
The Centre's core activities are centred around the following key areas: - techniques of extracorporeal gas exchange support in severe respiratory failure (VV-ECMO),
- Extracorporeal Circulatory Support Techniques for Severe Circulatory Failure (VA-ECMO),
- techniques of Extracorporeal Circulatory support (ECMO) for cardiac arrest (eCPR),
- Renal replacement therapies (RRT),
- Adsorption therapies (ECAT),
- therapies to support liver function (Extracorporeal Liver Support ECLS),
- Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE).
We are honoured to share that the Centre for Extracorporeal Therapies at the University Hospital in Krakow is a member of the esteemed international ELSO (Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation). Travel Medicine and Preventive Vaccination Centre
At the Centre you can mainly benefit from:
- consultations with specialist doctors regarding the risks associated with traveling to specific regions of the world;
- qualifications for mandatory and recommended vaccinations in tropical countries, including vaccination against yellow fever, along with the necessary entry in the International Vaccination Certificate;
- education in the field of pre-medical procedures in tropical countries and assistance in equipping a travel first aid kit;
- advice on malaria prevention.
We also offer vaccinations for people planning surgery, for women before pregnancy, and vaccinations against the human papillomavirus HPV and against influenza.
ATTENTION! The centre does not provide vaccinations against COVID-19!
Vaccinations are one of the best ways to prevent infectious diseases while traveling.
Before planning a trip, it is advisable to visit a travel medicine centre 4-6 weeks before departure to determine the appropriate vaccinations and then follow the doctor's recommendations.
1. Pre-travel mandatory and recommended vaccinations:
Currently, the only vaccination that is compulsory (based on the International Health Regulations) is the vaccination against yellow fever. It is required for entry into certain countries in Africa and South America (including Angola, Burkina Faso, Congo, Cameroon, Ghana, French Guiana, Togo, Sierra Leone or Rwanda). Its absence may result in refusal of entry or quarantine at your own expense.
Some countries also require travellers to have other vaccinations under their own visa laws. Currently, Saudi Arabia, for example, requires vaccination against menigococcal infections.
2. Other vaccinations:
We also offer immunizations for anyone interested in protecting their health. In particular for:
1) women planning pregnancy (e.g. against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox)
2) immunocompromised persons( including against influenza, pneumococci, meningococci and Haemophilus inf. type B)
3) before planned surgery or invasive diagnosis: hepatitis B
4) vaccination against human papilloma virus (HPV)
The doctors working at our Centre are specialists in infectious diseases, all of whom have completed courses organised by the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia and are fully qualified to run a certified travel medicine centre.

Transplant Centre
For those with end-stage renal failure, on dialysis or approaching dialysis, transplantation can be a lifesaver. With a successful transplant, patients may no longer require dialysis, which could allow them to live without constant stays in a hospital ward.
The University Hospital in Krakow performs several dozen kidney transplants from deceased donors each year. Patients are initially admitted to the General Surgery, Oncology, Gastroenterology and Transplant Outpatient Clinical Department, and subsequently to the Nephrology Outpatient Clinical Department.
We are pleased to announce that, since December 2017, the University Hospital in Krakow has been approved by the Minister of Health to collect and transplant kidneys from living donors. This is encouraging news for patients who are still waiting for a kidney transplant. Such a procedure could be a beneficial option for the patient, as it may allow for shorter waiting times, scheduling of operations, minimising the time the organ is out of the human body and appropriate immunological matching. The donor-recipient pair is thoroughly tested and the kidney procurement and transplantation procedure is designed to be safe for both donor and recipient.

Centre for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity
The Centre for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity was inaugurated on 1 September 2020 at the University Hospital in Krakow. The Department of General, Oncological, Metabolic and Emergency Surgery, together with the Second Department of General Surgery at Jagiellonian University, have been at the forefront of surgical treatment for morbid obesity for over a decade.
Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective and durable treatment for pathological obesity. The Centre for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity provides a comprehensive range of services, including qualification for surgery, pre-operative preparation and diagnosis, education, hospitalisation and surgical treatment with minimally invasive techniques, as well as long-term multi-specialist care according to an individual treatment plan tailored to the needs of the individual patient. All services are available to the patient at a single centre, with treatment coordination provided. The Centre ensures full compliance with national and international standards of bariatric care. It also implements modern perioperative care (ERAS protocol). The centre's operating model aligns with the planned implementation of the Comprehensive Specialist Bariatric Patient Care (KOS-BAR) programme.
The smooth operation of the Centre is made possible thanks to the commitment of the staff, comprising a team of doctors, bariatric nurses, dieticians, and psychologists, as well as the equipment capabilities and diagnostic facilities of the University Hospital in Krakow. The entire treatment process is supervised by a team of medical and administrative coordinators.
Ongoing cooperation with patient organisations (CHLO Bariatric Patients Association) and support groups also plays an important role.
The team's achievements in bariatric and metabolic surgery:
- nearly 2,000 operated patients,
- approximately 1,000 outpatient consultations performed annually,
- numerous scientific publications on bariatric and metabolic surgery,
- implementation of 6 research grants financed from external sources (NCN, MNiSW),
- organisation and coordination of nationwide, multi-centre research projects,
- participation in the implementation of international research projects,
- participation in the work on the pilot project of Coordinated Care for Bariatric Patients (KOSBAR),
- participation in the development of ‘Standards of Bariatric Care’,
- participation in the creation of the ‘Recommendations for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery’,
- active participation in educational activities for the Bariatric Patients Association (CHLO).
The Centre for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity is renowned for its comprehensive patient care. The Centre's objective is to prepare patients for surgical treatment and to monitor their weight loss and health improvement in the context of the diseases that often accompany obesity. Many patients struggling with obesity suffer from cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, sleep apnoea or have endocrine problems.
A comprehensive and individualised approach is required for each patient with obesity as a disease. Surgery alone is not sufficient. The patient's treatment plan must include input from a specialist in eating habits (nutritionist), education, nursing support, psychological support and motivation building. The Centre for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity provides access to specialists at the University Hospital who can diagnose the patient and guide their further treatment.
The new organisation of care for bariatric patients at the University Hospital is not only in line with the standards of bariatric care currently in force in Poland, developed by the Section of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery of the Polish Surgeons' Association, and compliant with Polish recommendations in the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery, but also meets the requirements set by the most prestigious organisations and audits in the world, such as the European Accreditation Council for Bariatric Surgery. For over a decade, the University Hospital has been implementing cutting-edge perioperative care based on the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocol.
The Surgical Obesity Treatment Centre performs a number of procedures as part of its activities. These include laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (sleeve gastrectomy), which involves the reduction of the stomach. In this procedure, a large part of the stomach is permanently removed, resulting in a smaller stomach. This means that patients are unable to eat large meals and must take care to eat more regularly. Another procedure is gastric exclusion surgery (gastric bypass), the procedure involves dividing the stomach into two parts, which modifies the digestive tract and reduces absorption. This method is employed when treating patients with diabetes, for instance. Revision surgery is performed on patients who require another bariatric operation or correction of a previous one. Finally, endoscopic techniques are used to insert a gastric balloon for six or twelve months, with the aim of reducing weight. This is a form of preparation for bariatric surgery.
The Centre for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity employs a multidisciplinary team comprising a doctor (a certified bariatric surgeon), a bariatric nurse, a dietician and a psychologist, who provide comprehensive care for patients.
Please find below details of our admission policy.
To register for the Centre for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity, a referral to a surgical outpatient department with a diagnosis according to ICD10 - E66.0 (obesity due to excessive energy intake) is required.

SWIT
The SWIT (System for Early Therapeutic Intervention) team reports directly to the Clinical Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the New NSSU in Krakow. It has been in operation since March 2020.
The SWIT is a project aimed primarily at improving the quality of treatment and increasing the comfort of medical staff. The idea of the SWIT is based on the concept of ‘Intensive Care without walls (ICU without walls)’, which involves extending the activities of the intensive care staff to the entire hospital.
In practice, this means that it is possible to extend intensive care treatment to patients who are not in the ICU on the basis of substantive support, and ultimately it will also be possible to monitor their vital signs remotely.
The SWIT increases the comfort level of other hospital staff, for whom patient resuscitation is one of the most stressful events on duty. The SWIT team not only responds to such incidents, but also creates in-hospital procedures for providing assistance, support and managing SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) until paramedics and doctors arrive. The quality of work of the entire hospital is influenced by the existence of a dedicated team, the implementation of clear procedures to improve its work and the continuous education of the remaining staff.
The core activities of the SWIT Team include:
- undertaking CPR within the hospital;
- providing training;
- monitoring the condition of patients potentially at risk of sudden deterioration using the NEWS scale2;
- assisting the doctor during consultations;
- transporting the critically ill patient to e.g. operating theatre, CT scan, etc.
The SWIT is a team of doctors and paramedics, organised according to the principle of minimising hierarchisation, which reduces decision time. It reports directly to the Ward Manager and the SWIT Manager.
An important aspect of the organisation of the Team's work in the hospital is the improvement of communication between the staff of the ward where the incident occurs and the ICU. The incident management scheme has been standardised so that a nurse who notices a deterioration in a patient's condition is able to contact the SWIT Team directly, reducing the time to obtain a substantive consultation.
